The losses in this industry made up 48.5 percent of the total jobs loss in the Metro Area.

The Professional and Technical Services, Manufacturing and Information industries have the highest United States location quotients (LQ). The Professional and Technical Services industry has a location quotient of 2. In other words, the percent of San Jose employment in the Professional and Technical Services industry is two times greater than the US average, showing signs that San Jose is an exporter of Professional and Technical Services.

In the San Jose Metro Area, Information Services saw the largest change in employment since the year 2001, changing a total of 175.8 percent. The region outpaced the industry growth in the United States of 7.5 percent and the State of California growth of 19 percent.

The Computer and Electronic Product Manufacturing is the largest industry making up 14.8 percent of total industry employment, or 114,644 jobs. This industry, between the years 2001 and 2005, saw the greatest employment loss in the San Jose Metropolitan Area. The industry lost a total of 53,490 jobs during the period, or 31.8 percent of industry employment. This made up 29 percent of total employment losses in the Metro Area during the period.

The San Jose Metropolitan Area ranks 28 of 363 throughout the US in terms the size of total employment in 2005. This ranking has moved down since the year 2001, at which time the Metropolitan Area was ranked 22 of 363 Counties.
